James Hyland

Vice Principal

I am honoured and privileged to be appointed as Vice Principal of Gems Cambridge International School, Abu Dhabi. A school that has achieved HPL World Class Status. A school that was rated outstanding during a British Schools Overseas inspection. A school that has made phenomenal improvements in the latest ADEK inspection. This is my sixth year at the school and have previously held the positions of Deputy Head of Secondary, Head of Year and Head of Boys PE. Over the past 3 years, I have been one of the HPL leads and worked to ensure the philosophy of HPL is intertwined into the DNA of our school and others across the GEMS network. I am passionate about creating opportunities for learners outside of the classroom and have organised numerous trips at CIA, including an expedition to Cambodia, a Ski trip to Verbier in Switzerland, and enabled all learners to attend Expo 2020 in Dubai.

I have a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) Degree in Physical Education from Leeds Metropolitan University and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Liverpool John Moores University. Most recently, I have been awarded my National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL). I have over 14 years experience in education and my previous roles in the UK include Head of PE and Head of Year. I have a passion for all sport, especially Rugby. I have played for 23 years and I am currently playing for the Abu Dhabi Harlequins. Before moving to Abu Dhabi, I received international caps for Great Britain Teachers Rugby League. I am from Manchester, UK. I love my city, especially the band Oasis and Manchester United.

Finally, I thank you for trusting us with your children. I promise that we will help unlock their passions and ensure they leave our school as global citizens, that are ready to thrive in a 21st century world.
